Designing and installing accounting systems, chart of accounts and accounting manuals — the documented procedures that make an organization auditable in the first place.
An organization that cannot be audited efficiently usually has a systems problem rather than an accounting one: no documented procedures, a chart of accounts that grew rather than was designed, and no agreed answer to who may authorize what.
We design and install accounting systems from that starting point. The work covers reviewing how transactions currently flow and where the control gaps sit; designing a chart of accounts that produces the reports the organization actually needs; specifying the books, registers and forms and who is responsible for each; setting the authorization limits and the segregation of duties; and installing the whole thing with the staff who will run it.
The output is normally an accounting manual — the written record of how the organization's finances are to be handled, which survives the departure of the person who used to know. We have designed accounting manuals for pension boards, university consultancy companies and mining companies, among others.
Where the system is to be computerized, this work runs alongside our information technology services, so the manual and the software describe the same organization.
